- 2 min read
Choosing the right grapple makes a big difference to how efficiently you can handle timber on site. Whether you're working on a farm, processing firewood, or running a forestry operation, the right setup will save time and reduce strain on your machine.
We see most customers across New Zealand starting with models like the C3 or C5.2, then moving up to the C10 for larger forestry work as their volume increases.

Quick Guide: What Are You Handling?
Logs (forestry / firewood / general timber)
Branches / Energy Wood (biomass / lighter material)
C36 → farm and contracting work
C7.2 → higher volume branch handling
C11 → large-scale biomass operations

Log Grapples vs Energy Wood Grapples
Log grapples are designed for handling solid timber, where control and grip strength are important. These are typically used for firewood, farm forestry and general log handling.
Energy wood grapples are designed for lighter, bulkier material like branches and tops. They allow faster handling when processing biomass or clearing lighter material.
In New Zealand conditions, this usually comes down to the size of timber you’re handling and how your crane is set up.
Detailed PALMS Grapple Models
Wood grapples are mainly categorised by their intended use — lifting logs or handling branches.

0.16 m² area, 1040 mm opening
PALMS C1
0.18 m² area, 1230 mm opening
PALMS C3

PALMS C5.2
0.26 m² area, 1530 mm opening
PALMS C10

Energy Wood Grapples (Branches & Biomass)
PALMS C36
0.21 m² area, 1475 mm opening
PALMS C7.2
0.23 m² area, 1550 mm opening
PALMS C11
0.25 m² area, 1635 mm opening
Rotator Connection Options
If you’re selecting a 0.16 m² grapple, you can choose between two connection types:
C01 → Axle-type rotator connection
C02 → Flange-type rotator connection
Axle-type connections are better suited to lighter or occasional use, especially if you're running multiple attachments with similar connections.
Flange-type connections are more rigid and better suited to regular, heavy-duty work. Most PALMS grapples are supplied with flange-type connections for durability.
Adapters are available if you need to match different setups.
Extra Reinforcement Options
For operators working in more demanding conditions:
C1HS and C3HS models come with reinforced claws
These are designed for increased durability and longer service life
Additional Attachments
To expand the use of your grapple:
PALMS GB3 Gravel Bucket (In-Stock)
Attaches to the 0.23 m² grapple
Allows handling of bulk materials beyond timber
Choosing the Right Grapple for Your Setup
The right grapple will reduce the number of grabs you need per load without overloading your crane — that’s where you gain efficiency.
It’s important to match the grapple to:
the size of material you’re handling
your crane or machine capacity
the type of work you’re doing
A well-matched setup improves productivity and makes day-to-day work easier.
